As a member of the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) Team, the position plays a critical role in incorporating process safety in the overall EHSS management systems. The engineer will serve as a technical and proficient subject matter expert, with major responsibilities which include the ongoing development and implementation of systems and processes to reduce risk and drive continuous improvement in process safety.

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for maintaining compliance with the applicable governmental regulations and company standards to maintain the monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping requirements applicable to process safety management for the site's processes comprised of more than 15 operating units. The individual will apply defined PSM elements with particular focus on management of change, incident investigation, and process hazard analyses; working closely with several departments within the facility to complete required project and operational tasks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain routine compliance with established company programs and practices for process safety
  • Gather and compile relevant data via records review and/or field efforts
  • Prepare reports, notifications, and other correspondence
  • Develop risk calculations using acceptable methodologies and assist in event classifications
  • Support and participate in company audits or regulatory inspections
  • Use root cause analyses for EHS incidents as part of relevant team participation

Functional:

  • Provide guidance to facility as a subject matter expert on the existing process safety management system, including, but not limited to hazard identification, risk assessment and risk management practices, such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Management of Change (MOC), and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR).
  • Ensure the facility's PSM system and associated programs and practices are maintained to minimize risk and ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations as well as company standards and RAGAGEP.
  • Manage risk assessments and provide direction on how to address risk, as well as define the scope of the risk assessments and determine appropriate risk assessment methodologies.
  • Establish & implement procedures to manage change, conduct PSSRs, monitor process for unrecognized changes, and ensure that appropriate risk reviews are conducted for changes.
  • Communicate and train on process safety metrics, as well as propose new leading/lagging indicators with purpose.
  • Provide technical expertise in the development of process safety training programs and assists in the development of process safety policies.
  • Develops policy/practice to ensure workforce involvement in process safety.
  • Collaborates with the appropriate departments and management to ensure process safety fundamentals and best practices are integrated, understood and implemented in appropriate areas such as operating procedures, engineering practices, and asset integrity.
  • Identifies and leads training/education on identifying process safety incidents and near misses per company requirements and any adopted API standards.
  • Provides expertise during process safety incident investigations and aids in determining appropriate action items to address root causes (corrective and preventive).
  • Support the facility during process safety/Risk Management Plan audits, manages action plans and focuses efforts based on risk prioritization.
  • Performs LOPAs, facilitates PHAs, maintains facility siting studies and structure placements.

Leadership, Communication & Development:

  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration with required personnel and management to relay technical information as it related to process safety performance and improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional peers and is an agent of change.
  • Develops in alignment with process safety competency expectations.

EHSS Team:

  • Actively participate and engage as a member of the EHSS team, collaborate and contribute to the overall improvement of EHSS.
  • May participate in the company's Process Safety Council as designated site representative.

Successful Candidates will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of directly related process safety and/or process design experience in a chemical manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Proven practitioner and/or advanced technical knowledge of overall PS practices, such as proficiency in PS hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk management practices.
  • Working understanding of chemical operations, safety systems, and safe design.
  • Time management and organizational skills; including the ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks and projects with competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence culture. Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable process safety standards, codes, regulations, and laws.
  • Professional certification, such as CCPSC, PE, ASP, CSP or equivalent, or commitment to achieving professional certification desired.
  • Travel required: Up to 15%.
